Abstract
In this report, I will address the level of knowledge and awareness of healthcare professionals in São Tomé and Príncipe about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its applications in the medical field, as well as other aspects related to the adoption of AI in healthcare.
AI Awareness
Based on available information, the level of AI awareness among healthcare professionals in São Tomé and Príncipe is classified as “medium”. This is due to the digitization of medical information, which suggests that AI is already being implemented in medical practice.
Key Healthcare Areas to Benefit from AI
Medical diagnosis and patient tracking were identified as key areas that could benefit from the use of AI in healthcare in São Tomé and Príncipe.
Main Obstacles to the Adoption of AI
The main obstacle to the adoption of AI in healthcare in São Tomé and Príncipe appears to be resistance from some older professionals. This can be a significant challenge to overcome.
Support from Health and Regulatory Authorities
Health authorities in São Tomé and Príncipe are believed to be supporting and regulating the use of AI in medical practice. This is indicated by the existence of similar programs from the Ministry of Health.
Ethical and Privacy Concerns
Although there is no additional information, it is clear that there are ethical and privacy concerns related to the use of AI in healthcare. However, it is unclear how these concerns are being addressed.
Success Stories or Pilot Projects
An example of success was mentioned by Dr. Ayres de Menezes. Some doctors in hospitals have already accepted the implementation of AI in medical practice.
Contribution of AI to Improving Access to Healthcare Services
AI can significantly contribute to improving access to healthcare services, especially in remote or resource-poor regions, provided to doctors in the patient’s historical access.
Patients’ Perspectives on the Use of AI in Healthcare
The majority of patients, approximately 60%, seem to prefer the use of AI in healthcare delivery due to the frequent loss of medical data.
Conclusion
I believe that one of the first steps to promoting awareness, training, and successful implementation of AI in healthcare in São Tomé and Príncipe is to encourage and educate healthcare professionals, with a special focus on doctors. In summary, São Tomé and Príncipe is not yet on track to adopt AI in healthcare, as it faces significant challenges, such as resistance from older professionals. It is critical that health authorities continue to support and regulate the use of AI and take innovative steps to address ethical and privacy concerns. Awareness and education of healthcare professionals are crucial to ensuring a successful transition to the era of AI in healthcare.
