About Us

Who are we?

i.equalcare is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization led by student researchers interested in AI, public health, and social justice. Through collaboration with professors, developers, and medical professionals, we tackle issues relating to AI bias and inform the public through reports and webinars.

Our Mission

At i.equalcare, we strive to bring awareness to potential biases in medical AI technology as it becomes increasingly used around the world. Through advocation for improved diversity in AI training data and adjustments in the development of current algorithms, we aim to prevent the development of discriminatory AI that could worsen global health inequity. We hope that by achieving more inclusive medical AI, it will become accessible and reliable for all healthcare professionals and the communities they serve in the future.

Current Issues in AI Healthcare

Lack of representation in training databases for AI models:

A majority of AI databases originate from the United States or China, which may result in underrepresentation of minority groups in those countries when training AI intended for global use. This could cause the AI to be inaccurate or biased against particular communities.

Misrepresentative data that is not addressed when developing AI models:

A number of factors may affect the data in patient health records, such as access to healthcare, financial situation, discrimination in clinical settings, etc. When AI models are developed without considering these factors, it is possible that some patient communities will receive incorrect diagnoses or treatment plans.

Our Action Plan

1

Investigate

Conduct studies across the world to identify potential shortcomings in the inclusivity of current AI

2

Inform

Increase awareness of AI bias among professionals and the public through reports and webinars.

3

Improve

Create and test solutions to AI bias from both a computer science and a public health perspective
